Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Malaysia, happy birthday to you !
Well ladies and gents, I'm happy to announce that Malaysia is now officially 61 year old ! Even if you're not Malaysian, please, don't steal our thunder :/
It's been a long time since we gain our freedom from the British Empire. Maybe things would have turn out different and we might be speaking British or Japanese if none of our ancestors did anything to overthrow both forces.
The word 'Merdeka', or 'independent' in English, is a word I feel like the newer generations of Malaysians are taking for granted. It's a word that appear every August and September to signify the end of the British reign over our nation, and yet other than the two months mentioned, it's rarely heard elsewhere. Most people nowadays view it as a public holiday, a break from the long working hours.
Though I don't disagree with the view of the public holiday, since life is quite stressful at this day and age, but the word "merdeka" needs to be taken more seriously. It's not supposed to be a word we throw out every August and September and then stored away. It symbolizes something bigger, a sacrifice, a time where Malaysians gathered hand to hand and worked together, setting aside race and religion for the greater good.
The word "Merdeka" needs to be revitalize as a word of honour, a word that we Malaysians are proud of every time it is mentioned, a word we Malaysians are grateful of every time it is in a topic, and a word that we Malaysians that we need to protect and pass on to the future generations, so that its meaning won't be lost.
To sum up what I have wrote, the word "merdeka" and the meaning/events behind it has to be reintroduced into society as an important factor in our daily Malaysian lives because without it,
We're nothing.
Happy Independence Day Malaysia. Hope you stay awesome.
Cheers,
Chua.
