Adjectives

Welcome back to the "weekly" blog post folks.
Even though we're considered as Form 4 in secondary school (or if you're American, tenth-grade in high school), our English teacher, Pn Monica informed us to bring colour pencils.

We're supposed to draw monsters, our deepest, darkest, most terrifying monsters that scare us the most. Obviously, everyone started to get excited ? I don't exactly know what the moods of people was but it kind of sounded like it. To be honest with you, I had fun. We were supposed to draw something as stated the above, along the description that best suites it. Then we will get someone's else description and based on that, we will draw that character/monster. Mine was a guy standing in the corner, and as I wrote, "wannabe shadow Freddy Krueger".

Then Pn Monica collected all of it and passed it around. I got Cathy's description.

-small eyes, moustache, big nose, sometimes has glasses. Sounds easy right ?

Well you're wrong it was not easy at all. As a person who has no experience in drawing this was actually quite hard to accomplish.

When we all passed back the drawn monsters, almost everyone burst into laughter. Some, like Wei Min, took a sub-par drawn Frankenstein and turned it into a super model, while some took it and drew... weird things.

In the end, we all learnt an important lesson from this. Description of an object/character is quite important as it gives the reader an image, or helps to the reader to imagine what the author/writer is trying to present in a story. Adjectives are a staple part of writing to describe a thing or a person. Be it tall, short, large, small, an adjective can make a lot of difference and could spice up one's writing! As a wannabe author, this is quite helpful. We should have more fun metaphorical activities in class! This is a great way of teaching.

Have a nice double holiday folks, and I'll see you in the next post.

Cheers,
Chua.

Writing a 10 word story

Welcome back folks. Sadly, it seems that third time isn't a charm. Oh well, back to basics. Anyway, I hope you had a good week. I'm sure many of you had written essays throughout your lifetime. Whether its an essay for school which is usually 200 ~ 400 words long, a story (length may vary) or even a thesis paper (thousands). Depending on your age and level of English education of course. Personal record, 13 thousand words in a story named Chrono Switch . I assume you already read the title and hence clicked on this post for... actually why did you clicked on this post? Either way, we were instructed to write a ten word story, with the word "spooky" being mandatory in the story. And with Halloween coming around the corner, I can see why they picked that specific word. I too, enjoy writing weird story that are outfitted with details and character development. So writing a ten word story is quite an interesting challenge. Coming up with something with a broad theme...

The Philosophy of Tetris

"I am the man who arranges the blocks, that continue to fall from up above..." I believe most of you of you know what Tetris is. Most of you are likely to have played it, or at least heard about it. Be it the charming 8-bit music, the satisfying beep after a line is completed, or just the blocks that fall into place one by one, filling the gaps, I"m sure that we all can agree upon the fact that Tetris is one of the best classic game we have ever played. While I was revisiting the game, trying to break another player's high score, I realize that, even in a simple game such as Tetris, which has the main goal of trying to get the best score you can through stacking blocks and aligning them, I can't help but think of the true meaning of Tetris. So today, let's explore the philosophy behind the Tetris. Keep in mind, that this is my opinion. Feel free to judge... constructively. First concept You don't have to be perfect to fit in Before we jump into...

Story starting with a sentence given by Pn Monica

L. ------ Ping.. My mobile phone lit up with a message from Pn. Monica.... It was a late Friday night, and after a long week people are surely tired and wanted to take a break. The message started a lot of distraught, since people wanted to take a break on a Saturday. "Please go to the library tomorrow. I have an important task for you." Sure enough, the request sparked a lot of questions in the group chat, varying from asking why do we have to go to school on a Saturday, or how important this task is, to mindless puns and jokes about said task. Following morning, we gathered in the library, chattering about what a hassle it is to get out of bed on a warm, cozy, Saturday morning. Just when the crowd began to get heated on discussing what they're going to do, Pn Monica emerges from her office, and carrying a thick book inscribed in an language that none of us has seen before. She place the thick book down on the table with a loud thump. "That's one h...
