Free Topic. yay.

Right, our generous teacher decides to give us another free topic. Awesome !

Today, I'll be talking about one of the fundamental thing that results in... well... our society today. One thing that always gets underestimated and taken for granted.

The invention of the written language.

We don't seem to care about the origin of writings, and or how it developed into the sophisticated thing we use on a daily basis today.

As me and most of the Form 4 students have already learnt that written language is born from different civilizations, each with different styles of writing and obviously language.

Greeks write Latin, Chinese writes Chinese characters, so on and so forth.

Our story starts in the Bronze Age, where civilizations such as Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt were on the rise. With groups of people, you form a community, with community we form a society. Society requires resources, like food, metal, clay and other materials to function. When you don't have certain material, you get it from other civilizations through trade. And with trade, you need to keep track on what goes in and what comes out of the city. Thus, the idea of writing was born. Not the one we see today, but in the most basic form.

Scribes from Mesopotamia uses clay tabs to keep track of the influx of resources. So, based on whatever that is imported in, for example, wheat, a wheat-like symbol will be drawn on the clay tab. This looks insignificant doesn't it ? But slowly, as time goes by, this symbol will be changed into a word based on the Egyptian language. I can't really explain the entire thing here as it's really complicated.

So here's a youtube video explaining the entire thing -

The thing about the idea of writing, is that after the Bronze Age Collapse, the idea of it almost disappear, dying out with the Bronze Age. A fair few were able to keep it afloat, struggling to pass on the idea of writing onto future generations. Think about it, writing is everywhere. It's in this blog post, it's how we communicate indirectly with each other.

With the invention of writing, we are able to write down our ideas, our thoughts, our feelings and much more. This way, people from the future are able to sit down, and read what has been inscribed from the past, and learned that during that period of time, certain things happened. Ideas helped us established our technological footing, and this became a common way to share ideas with others, simply by writing it down and passing it on to another trader or caravan and they'll bring it back to their civilization. See how amazing that is ?

Anyway, that's all for now.

Cheers,
Chua.

Optimism / Pessimism Bias

Welcome back, friends. Exam weeks was long and harsh, but now it's over. Hooray! As for the blog posts, they're starting again and this time, oh boy, free topic for days (at least I hope so). So fasten your seat belts as we explore more random topics for no apparent reason. Today's Topic : Optimism/Pessimism Bias "Great, another bias. What's next? K-Drama bias? Anime bias? Jeez, at least talk about something positive." Well, positive things aren't always fun to write. So... cliche and boring. I rather dig into negative stuff just to find out what causes them and how we can solve them. Doesn't  that sound positive to you? Either way, let's jump into today's topic. I'm going to cover both Optimism bias and Pessimism bias in the same blog post, because they usually are found together in a statement. But before that, let's ask ourselves this common question that is used to test optimism and pessimism. Is the cup half full or h...

The Philosophy of Tetris

"I am the man who arranges the blocks, that continue to fall from up above..." I believe most of you of you know what Tetris is. Most of you are likely to have played it, or at least heard about it. Be it the charming 8-bit music, the satisfying beep after a line is completed, or just the blocks that fall into place one by one, filling the gaps, I"m sure that we all can agree upon the fact that Tetris is one of the best classic game we have ever played. While I was revisiting the game, trying to break another player's high score, I realize that, even in a simple game such as Tetris, which has the main goal of trying to get the best score you can through stacking blocks and aligning them, I can't help but think of the true meaning of Tetris. So today, let's explore the philosophy behind the Tetris. Keep in mind, that this is my opinion. Feel free to judge... constructively. First concept You don't have to be perfect to fit in Before we jump into...

Writing a 10 word story

Welcome back folks. Sadly, it seems that third time isn't a charm. Oh well, back to basics. Anyway, I hope you had a good week. I'm sure many of you had written essays throughout your lifetime. Whether its an essay for school which is usually 200 ~ 400 words long, a story (length may vary) or even a thesis paper (thousands). Depending on your age and level of English education of course. Personal record, 13 thousand words in a story named Chrono Switch . I assume you already read the title and hence clicked on this post for... actually why did you clicked on this post? Either way, we were instructed to write a ten word story, with the word "spooky" being mandatory in the story. And with Halloween coming around the corner, I can see why they picked that specific word. I too, enjoy writing weird story that are outfitted with details and character development. So writing a ten word story is quite an interesting challenge. Coming up with something with a broad theme...
