Free topic yay !

Free Topic... You know what this means boys and girls...

For those who don't like historical studies or find them boring, you can leave now :P

Right, now that those who are uninterested are gone, let's talk about history !

Many of you may know this tongue-twister, be it from your parents or your English teacher

-"She sells sea-shells by the seashore."

It seems like a really simple, a sentence used to practice pronunciation of words starting with "s". Well, there's actually hidden history behind this simple sentence.

Enter, the Princess of Paleontology, Mary Anning.

Not a familiar name, isn't it ?

Well, Mary Anning was the first person to discover a variety of fossils, from the ichthyosaurus to raptors. Although, her discoveries were not credited to her at the time, and few know about her name now... Many people did not know the existence of dinosaurs at the time, and so when fossils as such were debated in the halls of society regarding on what it is, or what it used to be, but never who found it.

She grew up like her father, a person who collects eccentric objects on the beach, e.g interesting looking seashells, whatever that might have washed up on shores.  Hence, the sentence, she sells sea-shells by the seashore.  Living in a poor family, she sold every fossil to wealthy collectors which in return took credit for the fine, which Mary learnt to resent.

She had a total of 5 major discoveries on the beaches near her home. But as the more and more frequently seen fossils were dug out, her sales on the fossils reduced. The members of the Geological Studies of London didn't give her the recognition she deserve... and so now, we only know her as the woman who sold sea shells by the seashore.

Anyway, thanks for reading this poorly written blog-post.

Cheers,
Chua.

  2. Wow, I never knew that the tongue twister "She sells sea-shells by the seashore" was based on Mary Anning's life and job until reading your post. This was an informative and great write-up on the history of someone that contributed to the geological study of fossils.

Writing a 10 word story

Welcome back folks. Sadly, it seems that third time isn't a charm. Oh well, back to basics. Anyway, I hope you had a good week. I'm sure many of you had written essays throughout your lifetime. Whether its an essay for school which is usually 200 ~ 400 words long, a story (length may vary) or even a thesis paper (thousands). Depending on your age and level of English education of course. Personal record, 13 thousand words in a story named Chrono Switch . I assume you already read the title and hence clicked on this post for... actually why did you clicked on this post? Either way, we were instructed to write a ten word story, with the word "spooky" being mandatory in the story. And with Halloween coming around the corner, I can see why they picked that specific word. I too, enjoy writing weird story that are outfitted with details and character development. So writing a ten word story is quite an interesting challenge. Coming up with something with a broad theme...

My English Blog

R. Welcome back to another blog post folks. Today, we're going to talk about... scrolls Whatsapp ... give me a minute...  Huh.  My feelings on the blog and whether it has benefited me thus far. So let's talk about that. Ah... An English Block of Word . Not the best name I came out with, but it's still quite creative. I started this blog last year January on the 6th. At first when I came about the idea of writing a blog, actually no, it wasn't an idea, it was a weekly homework given by our dear teacher Pn Monica, with different topics every week. Honestly, when I first got the assignment to write a blog as homework, I was kind of amazed. Integration of the usage of the Internet and it's on my favourite subject? Score. Of course, this wasn't the first time I started the blog, my third time, in fact, the last two being some websites to share my own written fictional stories to my friends. Given a platform, and a focus to write on makes everything much easier ...

Isolation

S. Welcome back to another blog post folks, to preface this, this blog is going to be a long one, so um leave now if you don't like that. Also, if anyone is here just to see what topic it is for this week... uhm, don't. Because I chose to do a free topic here and did my literature essay in my literature book. So yeah, let's begin. Homo Sapiens . The only species from the genus Homo still exists. Of course, we have half-Neanderthals living around the world, but for the sake of this blog post, let's just say that we only have Homo Sapiens  around, okay? Once upon a time on Earth, there are several species from the genus Homo , 15, in fact, so far. Yet, as of today, 2019, we only know of one that successfully persisted through several wars and famine, disasters and conflicts, the Homo Sapiens . We built civilization from the ground up, stemming from rivers of the world, then conquering the world itself.  As much as I would like to talk about Homo Sapiens an...
