2018

J. --- In a time of a day, the Earth, this ball of rock will complete another revolution around the flaming ball of hot stuff we call the Sun. Soon enough, we'll enter the year 2019. So, how was 2018 for any of you? i doubt anyone reads blog but okay lol just pretend there's someone here 2018, from my personal perspective, has been an eventful year. New class, new topics, new subjects, and a whole new experience. Broke and repaired a few friendships, while letting some bridges rot. To me, 2018, was a great year, despite all the hardships. Pn Monica assigning us to write blogs has been a great experience, which we'll continue for the next year, and perhaps, after graduation, I will continue this blog too. 2018, from humanity's standpoint, has been a rough ride on the roller coaster of life, filled with ups and downs. Let's talk about the bad stuff first :  A myriad of natural and man-made disasters struck the Earth, causing casualties, and bringing up t...

Gaia's Tragedy, 4

I. let the cringe ensue --- Somewhere within the Messier Galaxy, the Pierce System where a full scale civil war is blowing up between the Messier Congress and the Rebels of Solar. As the ships slowly goes into orbit of Messier-1, the capital starbase for the Congress, multiple rebel ships appeared from all sides, and hailed ours. "Civilian! Leave now, or suffer with those scumbags!" "We're... We're... just here to deliver food supplies to the refugees below. Surely you only want the Congress to die?" "Fair enough. Going off comms." "Gaia, get the package in there, as fast as you can!" No reply. "Miss Gaia?" "Comms General, run a full rundown on the ship's crew." "All clear sir, Miss Gaia is not on the ship." The lights in the ship suddenly turned into red alert, and blaring alarms were sounded. "Warning....Warning... Escape Pod 2029 released. All crew steer clear of Bay 19 u...

Gaia's Tragedy, 3

H. "Well... well... well... Look who it is. Larry Lannister." "Kube Coray?" Gaia and I looked at each other, confused. "Wait... you both know each other?" "Yer mate and I were shipmates back on the Federal Battleship of 92'. Well, back when her sails were still on. She'll drift everlastingly in the void." "Still big in the pirate industry I see." "Even though Larry is my friend and I don't want to harm ye, the warning still stands. Leave." The navigator turns to look at me, hesitation in his eyes. "Sir?" "No. Why don't you leave?" "The ship has been carrying something I've been tracking for quite some time. A belonging of mine." "Still doesn't justify the need for bloodshed." "I guess you leave us with no choice, Kube. Fair winds and following seas. Broadsides, navigator." Nemesis turns, and her main batteries prepare to fire upon...

Gaia's Tragedy, 2

F. Still a story post, move on if you dislike this style of writing. --- Somewhere in the middle of nowhere in space... The trio continues on with their adventure to the Messier Galaxy... What surprises will spook them in their journey? As Nemesis slowly exits the Sol System, the ship transitions to its hyperjump phase, jumping towards a bright star, named Jumino. Found by an cosmologist in 2050, it would be one of the key experiment zone for humankind... The construction of a Dyson Sphere. "And if you look towards your left, you will see a big pile of mess leftover by the E.E.C.C, or the Experimental Energy Collection Corp." "The disaster of the Dyson Sphere. Legend says that-" "Now Larry, don't you dare bring up your 'beast of the abyss' myth again. This is humankind first attempt to construct something as large as the Sun. It's perfectly normal to make mistakes... Don't you think so too, Miss Gaia?" Gaia stares at the rui...

Gaia's Tragedy, 1

E. I'm bored and I don't think anyone is going to read blogs any longer so I decided to write some stuff. Blogs discussing stuff will be back on next week lol if anyone reads this. --- Year 2077 Venus. Once thought inhabitable by the sapiens of Earth, now terra-formed into a habitable planets with cities hovering above the volcanic plains of Venus. Earth has long established contact with several alien groups from other galaxies, and now Venus, also known as the third home of the humans, turns into a stop for weary interstellar travelers. In the bar, many stop by to enjoy alcohol made with exotic goods, and to share stories while adventuring out in the vastness of space. One corner of the bar is such, filled with tales of tragedy and triumphs, hosted by an man named Larry. Larry Perkins. My crew and I got off the starship Nemesis after a long trip to the Andromeda galaxy, liberating planets claimed by rebels and exploring unknown worlds. Many of us wanted to rest, and m...

The Philosophy of Tetris

"I am the man who arranges the blocks, that continue to fall from up above..." I believe most of you of you know what Tetris is. Most of you are likely to have played it, or at least heard about it. Be it the charming 8-bit music, the satisfying beep after a line is completed, or just the blocks that fall into place one by one, filling the gaps, I"m sure that we all can agree upon the fact that Tetris is one of the best classic game we have ever played. While I was revisiting the game, trying to break another player's high score, I realize that, even in a simple game such as Tetris, which has the main goal of trying to get the best score you can through stacking blocks and aligning them, I can't help but think of the true meaning of Tetris. So today, let's explore the philosophy behind the Tetris. Keep in mind, that this is my opinion. Feel free to judge... constructively. First concept You don't have to be perfect to fit in Before we jump into...

Keeping a Weekly Blog Helps Me Improve Myself

!nuf si golb. Welcome back to another blog post my friends. The god have spoken and we don't get a free topic this week. So today, we're going to talk about how keeping a weekly blog helps me improve myself. "Oh look, something positive for once." Yes, yes very funny. Well lets jump into it, shall we? For most people, me included, we can all agree that we don't actually do the blogs "weekly". Perhaps the lack of time or just the simple procrastination made us that way, but I'm sure that we all don't really do blogs on time. I myself started doing blogs on time after the exams simply because I was focusing on studying.  The blogs themselves are fun to do. They allow us to explore more topics,  be it by reading another person's blog, or maybe looking up some information just to write your own. It helps you practice writing , preparing yourself for the English exams coming in the future so you don't get stuck looking on a ...

Free Topic (literally)

Literally. #justiceforweimin Welcome back to the middle of the week, folks. "wait wait.... middle of the week? Nani?" Since I didn't really prepare anything thorough this time, today we're going to actually talk about Free Topic. "Weird... but go on." Freedom. It's something that everyone wants, right? Be it from slavery, endless stress working or confinement. But, is too much freedom actually bad? Let's look at it from a point of view we all can share, especially to those doing blogs as ordered  requested by Puan Monica, our English teacher. Personally, I find free topics easy to do. It's fun sharing and discussing topics that aren't well known by others, such as the previously discussed Negativity Bias , or the history of the Princess of Paleontology, Mary Annings. It gives me and others who like to write a chance to flex their creative muscles, to introduce a topic to others, or to share their fantasies through sto...

Optimism / Pessimism Bias

Welcome back, friends. Exam weeks was long and harsh, but now it's over. Hooray! As for the blog posts, they're starting again and this time, oh boy, free topic for days (at least I hope so). So fasten your seat belts as we explore more random topics for no apparent reason. Today's Topic : Optimism/Pessimism Bias "Great, another bias. What's next? K-Drama bias? Anime bias? Jeez, at least talk about something positive." Well, positive things aren't always fun to write. So... cliche and boring. I rather dig into negative stuff just to find out what causes them and how we can solve them. Doesn't  that sound positive to you? Either way, let's jump into today's topic. I'm going to cover both Optimism bias and Pessimism bias in the same blog post, because they usually are found together in a statement. But before that, let's ask ourselves this common question that is used to test optimism and pessimism. Is the cup half full or h...

Writing a 10 word story

Welcome back folks. Sadly, it seems that third time isn't a charm. Oh well, back to basics. Anyway, I hope you had a good week. I'm sure many of you had written essays throughout your lifetime. Whether its an essay for school which is usually 200 ~ 400 words long, a story (length may vary) or even a thesis paper (thousands). Depending on your age and level of English education of course. Personal record, 13 thousand words in a story named Chrono Switch . I assume you already read the title and hence clicked on this post for... actually why did you clicked on this post? Either way, we were instructed to write a ten word story, with the word "spooky" being mandatory in the story. And with Halloween coming around the corner, I can see why they picked that specific word. I too, enjoy writing weird story that are outfitted with details and character development. So writing a ten word story is quite an interesting challenge. Coming up with something with a broad theme...

Happiness

"Why are you always sad? Cheer up! The world is so beautiful!" Welcome back to the weekly blog post folks. I hope you had a nice week. Without further ado, let's begin, shall we? Last post, we explored some parts in our mind that makes us think negatively. Long story short, evolution as the culprit has made us value mistakes due to their consequences rather than optimistic thinking that will give us benefits, a.k.a  The Negativity Bias .  It is why sometimes people ruminate obsessively over minor mistakes rather than focusing on the greater good. Give it a read if you wish. Continuing on with last topic on Social Studies, let's talk about happiness.  Happiness is something we all strive to achieve... or do we? According to our favourite website, Wikipedia, the meaning of happiness can be defined as: In psychology, happiness  can be defined as a mental or emotional state of well-being which can be defined by, among others positive or pleasant...

The Negativity Bias

Happy weekend everyone! And as you can read from the title, it's a free topic week! Now, I know what you're thinking. "Oh boy, another history post, how fun  !"   Hold your horses my friends. Today we're going to take a break from our history posts, and do something else instead. Social  Science . So... to all you luddites (1)  out there, feel free to click off this post. To be honest, if you're a luddite, why are you using a computer/phone to access this blog in the first place ? So today we're going to discuss, in general, negative thoughts. Or negativity in general. Negativity in a person can come from many aspects.  One can be : (a) negative to themselves or (b) negative to others Scenario (b) usually happens when one is affected mass media, which is commonplace at this day and age, bad parenting, and of course, "friends". Birds of a feather, flock together as they say. Most of the time, they're doing so just to get more att...

Adjectives

Welcome back to the " weekly " blog post folks. Even though we're considered as Form 4 in secondary school (or if you're American, tenth-grade in high school), our English teacher, Pn Monica informed us to bring colour pencils. We're supposed to draw monsters, our deepest, darkest, most terrifying monsters that scare us the most. Obviously, everyone started to get excited ? I don't exactly know what the moods of people was but it kind of sounded like it. To be honest with you, I had fun. We were supposed to draw something as stated the above, along the description that best suites it. Then we will get someone's else description and based on that, we will draw that character/monster. Mine was a guy standing in the corner, and as I wrote, "wannabe shadow Freddy Krueger". Then Pn Monica collected all of it and passed it around. I got Cathy's description. -small eyes, moustache, big nose, sometimes has glasses. Sounds easy right ? Well y...

Merdeka/Free Topic

Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Malaysia, happy birthday to you ! Well ladies and gents, I'm happy to announce that Malaysia is now officially 61 year old ! Even if you're not Malaysian, please, don't steal our thunder :/ It's been a long time since we gain our freedom from the British Empire. Maybe things would have turn out different and we might be speaking British or Japanese if none of our ancestors did anything to overthrow both forces. The word 'Merdeka', or 'independent' in English, is a word I feel like the newer generations of Malaysians are taking for granted. It's a word that appear every August and September to signify the end of the British reign over our nation, and yet other than the two months mentioned, it's rarely heard elsewhere. Most people nowadays view it as a public holiday, a break from the long working hours. Though I don't disagree with the view of the public holiday, since ...

What Actually Transpired During The Holidays

Well that was fast. There goes the week long holiday that everyone anticipated. Previously I discussed about my plans during the holidays, and to summarize if it did happen, yes... some of it. I did complete my homework and studied a bunch throughout the holidays. It's a nice thing for a change and I didn't want to take any chances in failing my tests. Yeah it was boring, but no pain no gain as the wise old man says. I didn't do much writing as it turns out, just a few chapters here and there. But I did do a lot of research and learned a whole bunch of new vocabulary after reading some books and listening to some documentaries and podcasts. Sleeping was the best part of the holidays to be honest. Getting to rest up is a nice feeling in general. All in all, not a bad week. Cheers, Chua.

My Plans For The August 2018 Holidays

So a week long holiday is coming up, and I have some plans for it. For one, I'm going to actually finish all my homework and projects without delaying it. This is crucial since the year-end exams are arriving pretty soon and there's not guarantees that I might pass it. Hence, doing some homework while studying will prove to be useful since it's better to familiarize everything that's taught for the past few weeks to months. Secondly, I'm going to write a few short stories over the week. It's a hobby, really, but as they say, practice makes perfect. It will also help with my English writing and in general, thinking about points and facts during the language exams. Finally, sleeping. I've been pulling all-nighter for the past week due to some... last minute activities. Thus, I will take a break this week just to regain my energy and prep myself up for the next months. Those are my plans for my holiday. I hope you enjoy yours. Cheers, Chua.

ICT-ton and Carnival 2018

Well it's sad to say I missed this one purely because I was busy and no other reason. So I'm going to sum the event up through friends' experiences. To start off, there was a senamrobik activity in the morning. This is quite weird as... you know... it's a carnival.... not Sports Day to be exact. Nevertheless, that happened. I'm guessing most of the participants weren't wearing the proper attire as they didn't get the memo till the last minute. Besides, there was a dunking game that was setup by the Scouts. Though I didn't go to the carnival personally, a few clips circulated around social media such as Facebook and Instagram and that's how I know Joash from 4 Balau got dunked. Mr James that was a former teacher in the school along with Pn Lau got dunked as well. Lastly, the Teen Star Talent show. Again, I didn't go to the carnival so I do not know half of what happened during the event, but the highlight of the carnival was Mr Ganapathy, th...

Cheers, Chua.

Free topic yay !

Free Topic... You know what this means boys and girls... For those who don't like historical studies or find them boring, you can leave now :P Right, now that those who are uninterested are gone, let's talk about history ! Many of you may know this tongue-twister, be it from your parents or your English teacher  - "She sells sea-shells by the seashore." It seems like a really simple, a sentence used to practice pronunciation of words starting with "s". Well, there's actually hidden history behind this simple sentence. Enter, the Princess of Paleontology, Mary Anning. Not a familiar name, isn't it ? Well, Mary Anning was the first person to discover a variety of fossils, from the ichthyosaurus to raptors. Although, her discoveries were not credited to her at the time, and few know about her name now... Many people did not know the existence of dinosaurs at the time, and so when fossils as such were debated in the halls o...
